Every drain in your house meets at one pipe: the main sewer line, running from your home to the city main. How roots get in
Roots don't smash pipes. They find them. A hairline gap at a joint leaks moisture into the soil, and roots grow toward it, slip through the gap, and explode inside the pipe where water and nutrients are unlimited. Within a season or two the root mass traps paper and solids, and the line starts choking.
The symptoms in order
First, a single slow drain that keeps coming back no matter how often it's cleared. Then gurgling — a toilet that bubbles when the shower runs, or drains that glug after the washer empties. Then the unmistakable one: multiple fixtures backing up at once, with sewage appearing at the lowest drain in the house. That last one is the main line telling you it's nearly closed.

A cable machine can cut through a root mass and restore flow — but the roots' entry point is still there, and roots grow back into exactly the gap they used before, often within a year. Recurring root problems mean the line needs more than cleaning: either scheduled cutting and treatment, or repair of the failed section.

A camera inspection shows the roots, the joints, and the condition of the pipe between them — and it shows you, on screen, before anyone prices anything. If a contractor wants to dig without scoping the line, get a second opinion first.
